World of Warcraft Item Upgrades Upgrades to an item are a way to boost the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade it can boost an item's Mark Level or Rarity and boost additional stats. Upgrading gear in The War Within requires a certain number of Flightstones and Crests and each item comes with an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next item by a specified amount. Item Level When an item is upgraded, its stats are increased in value. This value is the sum of an item's upgraded perks (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrades can be expensive, depending on who you hire and what you decide to do. This is due to the variety of perks that have to be altered to upgrade an item. It can also be used to enforce gating requirements when waiting for dungeons, raids and scenarios. It can also be used to determine a gating condition when waiting for dungeons, scenarios and raids, and to limit the amount of PvP gear a player can wear (since PvP is limited to an lower level). The average item level can be found in the character sheet. Using the item level can help players compare the strength of equipment when they decide to buy or sell. It's a good indicator of an item's quality and how much damage it will be able to deal. The item level can also be used to evaluate items when examining the inventory of a seller. On your PC, you can check the level of the item using ALT, or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will display the item's full description, including ilvl. You can also locate it by hovering over an item and typing /itemlevel into chat. There are various theories on how the item level calculation is done. One theory says that the item level is calculated by a formula that calculates how valuable an item's stats really are. It takes into account the fact that different perks have different worth, and also that sockets have gems that increase the overall value of the item. This can lead to an item's ilvl which is calculated and is often very close to Blizzards actual item level. It's not the only thing that affects the level of an item. The location of where the item was dropped can change its stats. For instance it can add a level to the item's haste or crit score. This means that items that drop at higher levels will have higher ilvl than those from lower-level instances. Item Stats Stats on an item are a significant component of what determines the value of an item for players. The game uses them in a variety of ways to encourage players not to limit themselves to one weapon, and to encourage them to try out other weapons. The stat mods on a weapon boost the base stats. These stat mods are then enhanced by a player's skill. Upgrades to the item add by increasing certain stats of the item. The costs for upgrades are determined by the rarity of the item. A white or grey item, for example, will only be upgraded one time, while an item with rare tiers may be upgraded several times at more expensive costs. Another method to alter the stats of an item is through affixes. They are stat boosts which can be added by the player to an item. The affixes can be used to give the item extra damage, or add a unique ability to the item (such as reviving dead or reducing cooldowns) or make the item unique by adding a special name to the item. At present, all affixes can be rerolled by selecting them from the upgrade window and pressing the green button, which is accompanied by circles arrows. This process will cost the player a certain amount of gold as well as items that can be used to add to the upgrade gauge in the same manner as the other options for rerolling. In addition to rerolling affixes, players can select which of the available stats to be kept on an item after it is upgraded. The range of stats is determined by the item's level. However each item will have at least one stat in the same range, unless it's an item that is unique or a God Roll from a raid boss. Another thing that could be altered by introducing an option to upgrade the equipment without having to reroll the affixes or choosing which stats to increase. However, as with the base equipment, this would need to be done on a per-item level, and the item compare interface will not show all the stats that could be either lost or gained at the same time. Item Luck The Luck stat of a player boosts the chance of finding items and the properties that are spawned by loot and the strength of these properties. However, it does not directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade item s. It gives players the chance to upgrade their gear in earlier waves, and is therefore more beneficial in the initial game run as opposed to later ones, because most players value higher weapon scaling and defenses over raw damage gains. In addition to influencing item discovery, Luck also increases the chance of being successful when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This is not to confuse with the Blacksmith's overall chance of upgrading, which increase with each item level. They can also be increased by using anti-materials like a Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing. The shields, armor and weapons have the default Luck value of 40. These items can then be enhanced with golden ingots, spined leather or oak boards (depending on the type of material used) to give +40 Luck or to increase the Luck of the item up to 140. Furthermore, certain items, like the Hollow weapon that is infused with hollow can be outfitted to boost the damage of any damage-dealing skill by 5percent. These items can be purchased from the shop or crafted using the right ingredients. Item Failure Not all upgrades are successful. However, there are some cash shop items which allow players to increase their success rate or prevent themselves from losing an item in the event that the upgrade is unsuccessful. The rate of success of an upgrade is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage is the chances of successfully upgrading that item and can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limitations to how much the success rates can be improved and the chance of a failed upgrade cannot be greater than 100%.. The luck of an item may influence the effectiveness of an upgrade. Every item has an average success rate of 25 percent, and every item with Luck increases the chance of success by 5percent. Note that upgrades to items are rendered above the inventory items which means that enchantment glints and other effects may be obscured by the overlays. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
